The adhesive monomers react with dentin and enamel in an acid base reaction.
In the same time the polymerisation reaction starts forming 3-dimensional network.
As a result of the acid base reaction of the first step, water molecules react with glass-ionomer fillers of the resin cement.
The consequences are basic hydroxy ions that cause the neutralisation reaction until a pH of 7 is reached.
This cascade changes the material properties from hydrophilic into hydrophobic.
The result is a high mechanical strength and dimensional stability which is typical for a resin composite.
